Estelle Maisonett

Estelle Maisonett is a mixed-media interdisciplinary artist whose life sized collages incorporate photographs, clothing, and flattened found objects collected from her daily life and local community. Stacking these materials she builds interior and exterior scenes that become traces of diverse coexisting populations and an archive of the present landscape in the Bronx and greater New York City. Posing and manipulating clothing in her collages to mimic figural gestures she encounters, she often creates figures void of the human body to explore how perception of sociocultural identity relies on the figures' relationship to consumer products, location, and material. The slightly relief collages defy perspectival space and reality to question the optics of perception and representation of objects, figures, and place.
