Kai Chen

Like the spirit photography of the 19th century, Kai makes pictures that are testaments to an experience otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Through a variety of in-camera techniques, their pictures depict a quivering world where bodies are immaterial. In contrast to their confrontational photographs, they also maintain a separate but related practice of making small quiet objects that could be vaguely called paintings. Family is a consistent theme across Kai’s work, along with an interest in queer artifice, the act of looking, and vulnerability.
