Ningxin Yao is a graphic designer whose work centers on field, material, game, daily life, and the archive. She often approaches design through a playful mode of thinking, asking how its value might acquire weight within everyday spaces. Nostalgia has always been a part of her, forming the warm, poetic, tactile, and textured side of her practice. But this past does not refer to any particular historical period. Rather, it is her poetic synesthesia of intimate relations tied to a certain moment. She creates new aura through nonlinear, exophonic, and hacker-like juxtapositional forms of narration. This has become one of the primary ways she resists the dissolving mechanisms of AI within her personal practice. Her practice is like pumping elephant. It is not about whether people understand it, or how they understand it, but about how, when everything can be copied and circulated, our value can still retain its weight.
