Whitney Blue Toutenhoofd's work examines the cycles of construction, deconstruction, and repurposing that continually reshape the suburban American landscape. She looks at how the American built environment exposes, constructs, and maintains certain American myths and cultural aspirations, particularly at sites designed for tourism, escapism, and nostalgia. She documents monuments-in-the-making, artificial utopias, factories of fantasy, and public spectacles under construction.
