Maya Perry

My relationship with an interdisciplinary practice begins with experimentation. The root of that experimentation begins with the act of unlearning. Letting go. Letting go of the conventionality and structure of what is expected by a viewer and or the creator. Letting go of the heaviness that we’ve subconsciously linked to the topic of trauma or immense grief. Letting go of the heaviness to make space. Space for different patterns of behaviors, different bodies, different souls. Highlighting the neurodivergent perspective. Through different sounds, or objects. Through my body with other bodies. The body drawing the body as a home, as a bed. A bed with a sleeping cockroach between the sheets. A playground is on fire, somewhere this is a fact, elsewhere it’s a metaphor, and for me, it is an abstract sensation.

Maya Perry (She/Her) highlights how moments of intimacy and vulnerability can open us to memories of cruelty and violence. Perry also wishes to speak on the Neurodivergent perspective within her practice. She is an artist, musician and teacher based in New Haven.
